Planning editing styles (Miss Georgiou)

1. Why is editing important within a thriller film?
Editing is very important with a thriller as the cuts and change of shots within a thriller create a sense of uneasiness and uncertainty which is important within a thriller and trying to show the emotions of the central character or victim.

2. What editing styles will you include within your sequence and why? What effect will this create?

180 rule
The 180 rule is a hypothetical line drawn between the actors and the set that the camera can not pass. It is a universal rule used with in all film genres to keep the scene from a majority of one angle and view point. It is typically used so the audience does not get confused as to where the characters are in the room and gives them an element of special awareness when the camera focuses on different characters. By keeping to the rule it allows the director and camera men to keep the scene looking as realistic as possible. As a result of doing this the film is able to relate to the audience more as not only does it stop the audience's mind wondering in regards to where they are in the room ensuring the audience members full focus is on the scene it also manages to engage the audience more as by being realistic it allows them to relate the scene back to their own life creating an emotional bond towards the characters as they do. In the clip when in the main room, the right hand side of the room and wall is never shown at all during the scene.

Jump cut
A jump cut is present when the goes from filming outside the house to inside the house. This removes any moment for the audience to establish where the character is and so adds to the ideal situation of a unknown location. This creates a relationship between the audience and the character as by being able to see what they see it means they can experience the same emotions together and making the audience just as involved in the discovery as the actor looking at the arm. As well as this a jump cut is also used when the person on the bed suddenly makes a noise and the camera turns to see the men's reaction. This is used to highlight how immediate the response is and creates a sense of urgency and sudden panic. These emotions then create tension and a sense of chaos for the audience.

Timing of shots
The editing style timing of shots is used without this scene to highlight the different feelings experienced by the female victim as she comes to terms with what is going on in her house. Slower shots, which are used in the beginning, are used to show the girls concentration and uncertainty as it appears she is taking their time to look thoroughly which in turn makes the audience concentrate harder on the screen which allows any element of surprise to affect them more as they are more engrossed in the film. This slow speed of the shots also creates suspense and allows it to build up within the scene and there fore the audience as in such a deserted location it is almost guaranteed something is going to happen. When the man finally makes a noise the edits the begin to appear quicker to replicate the surprise felt by the actors and audience and add emotion impact. These fast pace shots then show the shock created through the high suspense of the scene and can be seen to replicate their hearts beating through being so shock.

3. How are your editing styles conventional to a thriller films?
As well as this the speed of shots which can be adapted at the editing stages are important to a thriller as they allow us to reitterate how the victim is feeling as slow shots in the build up in the film create a sense of suspense to put the audience on edge so when the suprise and shock factor comes the audeince is affected as much as possible. Fast shots would be used with chase scence and when victims are trying to escape to show their sense of urgency and desperation. This is very conventional to the thriller genre as the victims are suposed to be weak and inferior so they're slow or desperate actions allow us to reinforce this stereotypical characteristic.

4. How will your editing appeal to your audience?
The range of editing of editing used by my group will effect the audience as the different speeds used will allow us to make them feel on edge and panicy for the victim and the situation their in. This will appeal to our audience as the purpose of a thriller is to spook and frighten the audience and so by making them feel on edge and the ability to make them feel certain emotions allows them leave them feel satisfied and on edge.

5. How will planning your editing styles help in the preparation of creating your thriller film?
Planning the different editing styles we were going to use is very useful as  now, when filming, we have an idea of how long to carry on the scene so that the fluidity between scences can be achieved. As well as this deciding which editing styles to use before hand allows us to speed up the editing process as now we can make quick decisions when editing each scene rather then having to decide afterwards. To add to this planning this also made sure we included a variety of editing styles and techniques so when it came to the final cut of our film it demonstrated our skills learned.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding of the various editing styles that you would like to include within your thriller sequence. You have considered various styles and the effect that this creates, but further discussion of where these styles will take place is needed, to demonstrate further planning techniques.
