Target audience feedback of final thriller (Miss Georgiou)

Explain why audience feedback is important to a production?
Audience feedback is important to a production as it allows the group to view their sequence from their audience’s perspective to gage a reaction and different opinions as through making and producing the sequence the opinion of the clip may be bias from the team where as the opinion from an impartial focus group allows them a better understanding of areas to improve.

How did you receive audience feedback from your target audience?
Before the making of our sequence my group and I relied on and created a questionnaire to learn what was important for our audience for our film to contain. We first made PowerPoint presentation and presented it to the class stating to them our narrative and idea of then film to gage a reaction as for a thriller to be successful the audience have to want to go and see the film so creating an interesting narrative was crucial. However to receive feedback when creating our film we screen a production of the rough cut of our final thriller sequence onto a small focus group containing different genders and ethnicities but all from our target audience age category. Each of these people then received a sheet where they could right notes on both their opinion of the negatives and positives of my thriller sequence whilst the clip was playing. The sheets were made anonymous as well to ensure that people were honest with us and gave us constructive  criticisms rather then just being nice feedback as we made the improvements to our clips based on these results. We then collected all the sheets in and were able to read them all to take on the valid feedback we received and identify where it was necessary for the clip to be changed and if it needed too.

How would this feedback benefit your production and the industry?
Through creating up to date current feedback was very useful to both my production and the industry as although the stereotypical conventions of a thriller generally remain the same throughout the decades- found out by my research into the history of thriller films, specific tastes often change and so an audiences preference between different locations and narratives change and adapt along with the new audiences so its crucial to have valid feedback to rely on and base the thriller upon. This way I know I am correctly catering to the wants and opinions of the current audiences to create the most successful thriller I can.

Include 3 positive comments and reflect on them;
Low key lighting:- Through the use of low-key lighting it helped to create an eerie feel as well as making the audience on edge whilst watching the scenes taking place in the house.

Good variation and use of cinematography:- There were close-ups, long shots.
Wide variety which allowed the setting to be established to the audience.

Good control and steadiness of the camera:- For example when the male character is walking into the house, the use of a panning shot is used – used smoothly with recognising a major move.

Include 3 constructive comments and reflect on them;
Sound:- When our rough opening thriller was shown, it was believed that the sound in a particular places were vital as it would help to create an impact.

Confusing Narrative:- At the beginning it was relatable to the audience, however once we filmed that he was actually dead on the floor they were a bit confuse so we had to change the camera angles/movements and position slightly.

Different Lighting:- The use of the low-key was good however it had changed – as whilst we were filming different days the lighting had always changes slightly. Also when we were filming the shadow of the ghost – we needed a lamp to create the shadow – to enable this to work more light was used within the same sequence.

Overall explain how you have followed the aims of the brief by creating the opening two minute sequence to a thriller film.
My group found it hard to follow the aim of the brief of the sequence in the fact that a guideline put in place was that the films sequence had to last yet not exceed two minutes. When first editing our clip together we didn't initially realise how difficult it is to cut down a clip especially whilst still trying to contain the fluidity between shots through out as we created too much footage. This then led to us speeding up the beginning of the film helping make a bigger impact in the main footage of our sequence as the different speeds were able to contrast with each other and make the slower scenes appear even more intense and suspenseful. As well as this the brief also stated that along with the clip we had to include sounds and credits. To create these we stuck to the conventional texts for the credits choosing a white faded font as well as for the sounds opting for typically used sounds such as heart beats and footsteps to create extra drama and suspense.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding of why receiving audience feedback is essential. You have made a start in including the comments that you received, however, it is difficult to see what changes you made to your production, based on the audience feedback. This is because you have summarised the comments that you received instead of explaining and discussing your decisions on what you implemented and changed.
