Question 2- How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Explain the main characters in your film. Describe the representations of the characters and explain why you included them in your thriller film.
In my film I have a blonde male victim as the main character and a protagonist. The less direct roles also feature a stranger who walks down the street. The main actor is around the age of 17 years old. This is because my target audience is around the 15-18 age groups and so this character will relate to them as through being of a similar age. As well as this by being of a young age would present the idea of naivety and fear more convincingly than an adult would.  I decided to use a poltergeist as well as mutually we found films such as paranormale activity and the conjuring scarier than films such as saw which features a masked person. This is as although when you can see the villain the audience know what the villain has to do to get away and so become involved by emotionally willing them along a poltergeist creates a constant sense of nervousness

Is gender represented in a stereotypical way?
No. At first the main actor or actress was supposed to me as I was playing to the thriller stereotype of a blonde female victim however when it came to filming my lack of drama and acting experience made me feel as though the sequence was suffering as the narrative was not believable. Because of this my group and I decided to adapt and break the codes and conventions by using a mutual friend, Reece Davey as the main actor and instead create a blonde male victim as he was able to make the character and storyline more believable and therefore effective for the audience. As a team we believe that sacrificing the conventional character was a small price to pay for a believable performance during our thriller clip. However we decided to relate to the stereotypical victim as much as possible by using a blonde male victim so he was still attached to the stereotypical perceptions of innocence and naivety associated with blondes. This innocence the character portrays is importance so the audience can express maximum empathy towards them. This is very important as an audience needs to build a relationship with them in order to emotionally connect to the film. This makes them experience the scenarios more and therefore be affected by the shock and surprise factors more which are crucial in a thriller film.

Explain how the character would appeal to your audience?
As a result of the questionnaire I noticed that males were more likely to go and see a thriller film as females would typically choose the rom-com or softer version available. This makes the male victim more appealing to the audience as it relates to a larger percentage of our audience. As well as this, from making the victim the same age as our target audience it will appeal and become more effective to them as they can relate to the main character more. By being more relatable this then makes the audience feel more empathy towards the character regardless of them being male or female.

This allows the audience the ability to form a relationship with our main actor as he appeals to every gender and age. One way he does this is through being male, this goes against the stereotypical convention of the thriller genre where leading role is often played by a blond female victim opening our character up to appealing to the wider male audiences. Through being of a young would appeal universally to our target audience as young connotes ideas of innocence and being vulnerable which are key traits of a victim in order for the audience to feel an emotional pull and connection to the audience.

  1. Your analysis of question 2, demonstrates a basic understanding of how characters are represented in your thriller. You have made a start in explaining your choices and decisions about including a male as your main character, but you have failed to include images, points on representation, clothing, how the character appeals to an audience, etc to extend your knowledge and understanding further.
